And so, to the sounds which would have pleasured or abused your ears during the 82 World Cup.
We'll start with the England World Cup Squad and they're offering "This Time (We'll Get it Right)" / "England We'll Fly the Flag" which reached No. 2 in May 1982. We're still 2 World Cups away from New Order and 'World In Motion', so this leaves us in the very familiar football song territory of 15 men shouting to a slightly modernised Oom-Pah beat.
The B-Side (or 'Second Half' as it's refered to on the sleeve) brings us some terrible synthesizers and a tune that sounds like it ought to belong on an advert for British Airways. Full A Side Lyrics
Next we're facing the Scotland World Cup Squad and B.A. Robertson and "We Have A Dream" which reached No. 5 in May 1982. (B-Side "Wrap Up The World")
I must confess, until I started researching this page, this song had completely slipped from my memory, but upon hearing it again it all came flooding back. I've a memory of B.A. on Top Of The Pops performing this like Laurence Olivier perfoming Hamlet, especially the spoken part at the beginning: "I awoke in the night with a fever and the sky was the darkest blue and a still voice was calling to me 'your country is needing you'". Upon getting hold of the 7" single, it appears the opening spoken piece is by John Gordon Sinclair (out of Gregory's Girl) and has apparent contributions from jockey Willy Carson and the then Miss Scotland. Now I'm into completely hazy territory with the Northern Ireland World Cup Squad and Dana and "Yer Man" which failed to chart at all.
Also coming out on the back of the World Cup coverage were Jeff Wayne with "Matador" which was used as the ITV World Cup Theme, which reached No. 57 in July 1982 and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with "BBC World Cup Grandstand" which reached No. 61 in July 1982.
